The orbital drive oscillates the 12-inch brush or pad (sold separately) on the bottom at up to 175 revolutions per minute (RPM) to buff, clean, polish, sand, scrub, strip, or wax floors without making the machine twist or creating swirl marks or gouges. A 50-foot power cord enables the floor machine to cover a larger area without changing outlets than machines with shorter cords. If you are considering this model vs. the ultra orbiter, keep in mind that the commercial 550MC unit also has a 1/2 horsepower motor despite the Amazon description which indicates that it has a 3/4 hp motor. This can be confirmed by contacting Oreck. It appears that the cord on the commercial model is longer but that the orbiter ultra has a longer warranty. The 550MC commercial model comes with a black mounting pad which is essential for use of accessories. Accessories are available at additional cost.
The machine is a pleasure to use. It is easy to control and has plenty of power. I cleaned my vinyl floor and also a good portion of my wood dining room floor. I was satisfied with the results.
The ultra model appears to be so similar to the commercial model that I think either would be fine. I did think I was getting a more powerful motor when I placed my order but there is little to go wrong with this device necessitating a 10 year warranty (applicable to the ultra unit) so I don't regret my purchase. Oreck customer phone service is not outsourced and the people I spoke to were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
I have yet to try to clean tile so I can't comment on this. I have no plans to use the machine to clean carpet as I have a carpet cleaner which uses detergent.
Addendum:
Despite the information provided by Orek's customer service to the contrary it appears that this unit really does have a 3/4 h.p. motor. I am happy to hear this since it still can be used with any standard 15 amp outlet. I have used this floor machine several times since purchase on sheet vinyl and wood and I have no regrets. It is a fine machine.
