My wife and I have three children. My wife also runs a child care (day care) service in our home. That's a lot of little hands that need to be washed several times every day. I'm not an expert on children, but I do know that getting them to wash their hands, especially after every visit to the bathroom, can be a bit of a challenge. As kids tend to touch everything, and also tend to touch their face and put their fingers in their mouth quite often, washing their little paws is extremely important. So how can you get a group of children to WANT to wash their hands? My wife and I decided that installing some touch free (IR) soap dispensers might peak their interest.First I must say that we were correct. The kids LOVE to use the touch free soap dispensers. In fact, the younger they are the more excited they seem to be about waving their mitts under these devices. But be warned, not all IR soap dispensers are created equal. While the kids loved every model we installed, we found problems with all except for the Technical Concepts (TC) AutoFoam Touch-Free Wash System. The models we purchased from Better Living Products, Alton, and SimpleHuman quickly drained batteries and either didn't dispense enough soap or made a mess when the children used them. Not only did we find the performance of these products to be somewhat poor, they were fairly expensive and only held a small amount of liquid soap. At this point we had already tried a pair of three different makes/models, and had spent quite a bit of money on the dispensers and the batteries to power them. We were about to give up and go back to the standard Softsoap disposable pump dispensers when we came across a fabulous dispenser in a local hospital restroom. The hospital had a TC AutoFoam Touch-Free Wash System mounted to the wall, which produced a liberal dollop of soap, in the form of foam rather than the traditional gooey liquid soap. Rubbing the foam in my dry hands did not feel thick, sticky and slimy, like the typical liquid soaps do. The lather was good and the smell was very pleasant. I decided right then that we would have to try these in our home.
Although they are larger, bulkier and less stylish than the dispensers typically designed for home use, the TC AutoFoam Touch-Free Wash System doesn't look as bland and industrial as most soap dispensers are in commercial applications. They really do look quite nice in our home. The dispenser unit measures approximately 10 7/8"-H x 5 3/16"-W x 5 1/4"-D and weighs in at just 2.71 lbs. (without the batteries or soap installed). This dispenser is available in the following two-tone colors:
- Black/Chrome
- Black/Black
- Black/Grey
- White/Black
- White/Grey
- White/Blue
- Clear/Clear
Although all IR touch-free soap dispensers reduce the chance of cross-contamination, the TC AutoFoam Soap System also boasts the following features:
- Smart SensorTM and patented technology detects user's hand to automatically dispense a controlled dose of foaming gel wash.
- Interference Tone - if an object is in field for more than 10 seconds a beep tone will sound.
- Green LED flashes when object is in field.
- Yellow LED light blinks when battery life is low.
- Red LED light blinks when refill is low or empty (also beeps 2 times every 8 seconds).
- On/Off Tone Switch allows the user to turn off/on the tone for low battery/low soap indicator.
- Soap/battery compartment cover locks closed, requiring a key (included) to open, preventing persons from opening the unit and messing with the contents.
The AutoFoam Soap System provides up to 2,750 metered hand washes per 1100 ml refill pouch. The unit is powered by 4 C-Cell alkaline batteries (not included), and is rated with a battery life of 120,000 cycles or up to three years. After installing 4 new AA batteries, nearly every month, in our recent liquid soap dispensers, 2 or more years on a single set of batteries is extremely pleasing and much more economical for my family. The unit mounts to a wall with screws and anchors, or to glass or tile with double-sided tape (all are included with the AutoFoam Soap System). It should be noted, this dispenser does not come with soap, so you will need to purchase soap and batteries for this unit to work (although complete starter kits are available, which includes everything you need to get started). The 1100 ml soap refill pouches are available in three formulations: Enriched Foam Lotion w/Moisturizer (light blue - citrus scent), Enriched Foam Antibacterial (clear - dye & fragrance free), and E2 Antibacterial Foam (clear - dye & fragrance free). The E2 Antibacterial Foam Soap meets the E2 requirements for food preparation areas, which could prove useful if one wishes to mount one of these dispensers in their kitchen.
The installation of this unit is completely painless and can be completed in just minutes. Installation requires the use of a drill with 1/4" or 6mm bit, a small hammer (to tap the anchors into the drilled holes), and a Phillips screwdriver. The box that the dispenser comes in includes a drill template on the side, which you cut out with a pair of scissors. When determining where you plan to install the dispenser, please keep in mind that it must be mounted at least 6 to 8 inches above the counter-top, sink or other surface. Before mounting the dispenser, you will need to hold the unit in the desired location and install 4 C-cell alkaline batteries, then close the cover (without installing the soap refill pouch). This initiates the setup sequence, at which time the sensor automatically detects the distance between the bottom of the dispenser unit and the surface below. If the sensor detects that the unit is too close to a surface below, it will sound a beeping tone every half-second, while the green indicator light will flash once each second. If this happens you will need to move the dispenser higher up the vertical mounting surface, until the tone and indicator light cease. If mounting to a mirror or tile surface, you press the included double-sided tape to the indicated areas on the back of the dispenser, then press and hold the dispenser to the surface for about 15 seconds. If mounting to a plaster or drywall surface, simply hold or tape the drilling template to the wall and drill holes at the indicated areas. Remove the template from the wall and gently tap the included anchors into the holes with your hammer. While holding the AutoFoam soap dispenser to the wall, install the included screws through the mounting slots, located on the interior of the dispenser unit. The holes are elongated, so you can make small vertical and horizontal adjustments to the unit before tightening the screws firmly. You are now ready to install the soap refill pouch, which requires you to open the dispenser cover with the included cabinet key. You place the refill pouch, with the nozzle pointing down, into the pouch holder, and remove the protective nozzle cap. You then snap the spring-loaded pouch fitment into the U-shaped bracket, insuring the nozzle fits into the actuator lever. The dispenser dose program resets automatically each time a refill is installed, so you should now hear a long beep, indicating that the refill has been installed properly. All that is left is to close the dispenser cover. The TC AutoFoam Soap Dispenser is now ready for use. If these instructions sounded somewhat complicated, it is probably my weak ability to translate the installation steps, because the process is really very simple. To activate the dispenser, simply place your hand under the bottom of the unit. An ample metered dose of foaming soap quickly falls into your hand. If a second dose is needed, remove your hand and then place it under the dispenser again. Now just lather and rinse. I am very impressed with how quickly the unit dispenses the soap. There is no need to hold your hand under the unit for more than a second or two. Once it dispenses the soap it will not activate again until your hand is removed and reinserted under the unit. This prevents too much soap from being dispensed into a child's palms if they leave their hands under the unit for too long. In fact, if an object if left under the unit for more than 10 seconds, a beep tone will start going off to warn you. Another thing my wife and I really like about the soap is that it comes out as a nice, foaming wad of fluff. No dripping and no gooey mess. In fact, the bottom side of the dispenser remains clean and free of soap residue. There is also very little noise produced by this unit. All you hear is a whisper-quiet whir and click sound, which completes in about one or two seconds. The overall operation of this unit is as near perfection as you could ask for.
My wife and I are very pleased with our new TC AutoFoam Soap Dispensers. We have one in both of our bathrooms, and everyone really enjoys using the dispenser. The foaming soap really brings a look of excitement to the little one's faces. You should see them grin every time they get to use it. We never have to remind them to wash their hands. And we adults enjoy it just as much as the kids do. Every visitor that uses our bathrooms comment on how great they think the dispenser and foaming soap are. We recommend this model to everyone we know, and I would like to pass along my recommendation to everyone that reads this review. Whether you have children or not, this foaming soap dispenser is sure to bring you many years of germ free hand washing. And the best part is, the TC AutoFoam Touch-Free Wash System costs much less than most of the designer touch-free dispensers produced for homes. It may not be quite as stylish as those other devices, but the TC AutoFoam dispenser delivers up to 2,750 hand washes per refill, lasts for up to 120,000 hand washes or 3 years per set of batteries, is easy to install and produces the perfect amount foaming soap at every wash. With no fuss and no mess, this is honestly the best touch-free soap dispenser on the market today, in my humble opinion. Be sure to shop around because the dispenser and soap refills seem to have quite a broad price range. I also found that the starter kits (which include the dispenser, batteries and one soap refill pouch), while convenient, seem to be overpriced. My wife and I found the dispensers for $29.99 each, and the soap refills for $17.99 each. We consider the dispenser as being a one-time investment, and the soap refills are fairly economical as each one should last us for several months. Getting your kids to actually enjoy washing their hands is priceless, and the TC AutoFoam touch-Free Wash System will make this happen. It is definitely a hit in our home.
