I've been a Home Brewer for about 18 months now, mainly extract brewing with some partial mash/specialty grains.It has always been a trial to estimate and monitor the gravity of the wort when I'm doing a mini-mash, or during the boil.
With the Refractometer that is no longer an issue. I've been using Berries and Local Honey and other ingredients like that for awhile and I've always had to guess at the effect they would have on my beers. Now the guessing is over.
I can pull a couple of drops during a mash or the boil, check the Gravity and get right back to work. No need to wait for a couple of ounces to cool down for my hydrometer to give an accurate reading when I can pull a couple of drops out they will quickly cool to be within the range for an accurate reading (120 F) with the Refractometer.
