This laundry powder does not easily dissolve in water. Soft water at that (according to the water agency here in Portland, OR).

Like most front loading washing machines, mine has a tray which accepts, then flushes the detergent into the drum at the start of the wash cycle. While the previous powder detergent (Trader Joe's) we used was successfully washed down into the washing drum, this stuff gets wets and then hardens in the tray, never making it into the washing cycle. And I'm talking pretty much all of it becomes a rock, which I pull out whole at the end of the cycle. There's not even a drizzly trail indicating that a few grains made it.

Out of curiosity, I submerged the hardened clump of powder in a jar of water to see how easily it would dissolve. Not easily at all. I broke it into smaller parts with my fingers; shook it. Clink, clink, clink. I let it sit for a while then returned 20 minutes later, shook it vigorously again. Clink, clink, clink. It is now 45 minutes later and large pieces are still sitting at the bottom of the jar.

The only solution I can think of is to pre-dissolve this powder by stirring it into a small amount of water, and then putting it into the detergent tray. But who wants to do that?
